5 Things To Do As A Family this Easter
With Easter fast approaching, it’s easy to get swallowed up by all the usual rigamarole. Make this Easter more meaningful by switching to these family-oriented activities. Here are 5 things to do as a family this Easter.
Meditate on the Easter message
Good Friday and Easter Sunday come so quickly that we as Christians don’t take the time to focus our hearts on the meaning of Easter. We’re coming so quick off of the short work week, that we enter into this holy celebration completely unprepared. Instead, take time as a family (aside from church services) to tune your hearts to receive the good news of Easter: that Jesus Christ died for sinners and rose from death to give them eternal life. Make time to sing songs, read Scripture, and talk with your spouse and children about the joy of knowing God.
Go to church
A high point of Easter weekend is to fellowship with God’s people, sing praises together, hear gospel sermons, and celebrate the Lord’s supper. The Good Friday and Easter Sunday services should not be missed due to needing to prepare food, to meet with visiting family (bring them along!), or to take part in other interests. Instead, bring your family to church. You will be encouraged by meeting with brothers and sisters; you will rejoice over being reminded of God’s grace; you will be nourished by listening to the gospel and taking communion.
Open your home to some unlikely people
Typically Easter is a time to gather your family for good times and glazed ham; there’s is nothing wrong with that! However, Easter is also an opportunity to invite some people you don’t usually get to enjoy a feast with. Think about the single people, the international students, the church friends, the neighbours, etc in your life. Think about the people who are away from family or want to avoid their family. This could be a great way for your family to host people who would otherwise be alone at home and get to know them more. Also, conversations can naturally flow into sharing the gospel this weekend.
Take some time to rest
I know how these weekends can go: usually, they are so jam-packed that you feel more exhausted than you did before. Do take some time to rest and relax. I know I might be contradicting my last 3 points, but don’t fill your weekend with too much. Busyness does breed stress and takes away time from meditating on the good news of Easter. So enjoy a long, hot bath. Take the family out for a walk or go to sleep early. Pick up a good devotional or start that book you’ve had your mind on. And of course, brew some coffee and snuggle up.
Start some new traditions!
Get excited to start some new family traditions. We’ve already named a couple: spending time before God, going to church, opening your home to unlikely people, and taking time to rest. But check out some of these other fun traditions you can try:
- Show your toddler these Resurrection Eggs
- Go on a Good Friday Nature Walk
- Make these delicious Easter morning sticky buns
- Do some Jesus themed colouring with the whole family
